mmmm guitar tone is delicious.

that said, your voice is missing a ton of low end, sounds like your singing out of your throat! Your articulation and pitch is a bit unsettling as well.

If I ever get the house alone I'll send you a version of my take on the vocals :)

Thank you. the vocals were done over a year ago, with the original instrumental from Killswitch Engage. A studio release. Also, ONLY the first set of vocals has the "phone" filter on them. On purpose. That would account for the dissipated low end. :) Hopefully you listened longer than that. haha.
I've had a lot of training and experience since laying down these vox. :) Could crush these now.

Will add a new version soon, I must also complete the music. Cheers for the review, man.

thanks jp! unfortunately, the project was a huge mess, and incredibly hard to navigate. I'm suuuch a slob.

not the first midi rip on your account, dont say you made it from "scratch" when odds are pointing towards it just being a downloaded midi.

that aside, your drums are really drowned out look up somet tutorials on sidechaining, deadmau5 uses this technique in practicaly every song of his.

The string lead is pretty unnatractive sounds like a bad strings preset on a synth, the attack on it is a bit delayed so it sounds awkward as well because of that.

You're drowning out the mid range of your mix, when you put layer after layer of that string thing loudness at the same frequencies build up and its an easy way to clutter your mix.

There's not much sub or lower bass end in your bass synth.

and thats just the tip of the ice berg, keep on workin mate.

the tone hooked me in, really superb thrashy sound. production in general is great.

but instrumental rock songs like these gotta really keep the listener hooked in with with good song structure and creative ideas,

it just seems like thrashy riff after thrashy riff, with nothing too new going on ultimately, if you listen to any of the great instrumental pieces by metallica or dream theater the ballad structure is popular with huge changes in mood and progression to evolving themes and melodies. theres at least three completely different guitar tones to keep you entertained.

I know what you're saying, but I only had 2 weeks to come up with the song, so most of that time was spent on production. Besides, I write instrumental tracks with the intent on adding vocals, I just can't write lyrics or sing that great, so I leave it open for a singer's input. I tried adding some layers of guitar, but I think too much would have made the mix muddy. What I really needed was some synth, but the riffs were thrashy so I didn't think it would mix well.
I understand where you're coming from, but my goal was to make some catchy riffs, and make it sound clean, and heavy. So if you want to hear a progressive instrumental, make sure 'progressive' is tagged on the song, otherwise you'll be disappointed :P

not a lot of unifying themes going on, makes a song come off as rather amateur.

the organic kit isnt too appealing to me, the screamy synths were sloppy, sounds like something made with the scream filter in massive with too much resonance.

leady synths come in on and off with melodies that have had no introduction, also rather usnettling. no effects leading in or out of sections also can leave this impression.

the vocal effects were kind of nice, but they need a good dose of reeverb to not come off as cheesy and to blend them into the mix. all the elad synths could use a touch of reeverb for a degree of proffesionality.

i cant say much about the mix, as im practically on laptop speakers atm, the drums seem rather punchy though im without low end so idk.

did you deserve top 8? frankly i dont think so. but i didnt listen to all the songs in the contest. the ones in the top 8 certainly seemed better structured though.

Thanks for the in-depth review, brother. Actually, that "screamy synth" is not as synth at all - it's a bass guitar with a lot of effects. Experimenting with sound lol

I don't think I deserved top 8 either - I really didn't spend too much time on this. Was really a side project just for the heck of it. Still, I'll have to keep those tips in mind!

Just an experimental tone. What kind of tone do you like? I'm after a smooth raw tone, and can emulate pretty much anyone's tone with my pod. I'd be interested in knowing, because it might help me to my own goal too.

I also have some much smoother tones, but I really dig the crushing of this one. haha. And my smoother tones come with a butt load of tweaking. Cheers for the review, bro.\m/

sucks that your at a 3.19 score this is some quality work bro!

the kick and snare could pop a bit more, my advice would be to sidechain everything in the track to the kick and snare.

Watch the master clipping/limiting too imo.

i clip intentionally, i prefer the aggressiveness and saturation a bit of digital distortion adds :)
